Description: Two 8" x 10" photographs show construction of the Ohio History Center in May and July, 1969. At a press conference held in November 10, 1964, Governor James Rhodes included financing for the construction of a new archives, library, and museum building for the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection). Groundbreaking ceremonies for the building that would become the Ohio History Center were held on August 22, 1966. The new building opened on Sunday, August 23, 1970, and was dedicated to "the people of Ohio whose illustrious deeds are herein enshrined and proclaimed for the inspiration of all." Upon its opening in 1970, the American Institute of Architects applauded the Center as a "bold, imaginative, almost startling structure." Architectural Record, in a July 1971 article, called it "no doubt the most architecturally significant public structure built in Ohio since the State Capitol Building." W. Byron Ireland & Associates, a Columbus architectural firm, designed the Ohio History Center building. The building is an example of "Brutalism," a rational, structuralist, monumental style exported in the early 1950s by French and British architects. Distinguished by its structural honesty and undisguised, blunt use of materials, Brutalism departed from conventional bourgeois styles. Stone and marble were rejected in favor of form-textured concrete, or beton brut, a technique employed by the French architect LeCorbusier. Founded in 1885, the Ohio History Connection (previously the Ohio Historical Society) conducts a range of activities related to interpreting, collecting and preserving the state's heritage. In the last century, the organization has collected more than 1.5 million items pertaining to Ohio's history, archaeology, and natural history. Description: This photograph shows the Cy Young Memorial in Newcomerstown. The monument was erected in 1955 adjacent to Cy Young Park, where Young threw out the first pitch on June 24, 1953. The photograph measures 2.75" x 2.75" (6.99 x 6.99 cm). Denton T. "Cy" Young (1867-1955), a native of Gilmore, Ohio, began his baseball career with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890. He later played for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Boston Americans, the Boston Pilgrims, the Boston Red Sox, the Cleveland Naps (later called the Indians), and the Boston Braves. On May 5, 1904 Young pitched the first no-hitter in American League history in a game against the Philadelphia Athletics. Young won 511 games in his career, and had 15 seasons of 20 wins or more. He pitched and won two games in the first modern World Series. In 1937 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Cy Young Award, given to outstanding pitchers in the American and National Leagues, is named in his honor. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Three photographs document the grounds of the Governor's Residence in Bexley, Ohio. Architect Robert Gilmore Hanford designed the Jacobean Revival home for Malcolm D. Jeffrey, son of Columbus industrialist Joseph A. Jeffrey in 1923. The home was donated to the State of Ohio by the heirs of Florence Jeffrey Carlile, a sister of Malcolm, in 1955 for use as the Governor's mansion. Governor C. William O'Neill became the first governor to live in the home in 1957. The first governor's residence was at 1234 East Broad Street in Columbus. The Bexley home continues to serve as the Governor's Residence into the 21st century. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The photographs measure 5" x 4" (12.7 x 10.16 cm). Description: Harry Rife of Preble County. Electrocuted January 19, 1910 for the Murder of Mrs. Lydia Gilmore Griswold. Lydia Griswold was employed as the first permanent librarian of the Eaton Library in 1901. According to the news report, Harry Rife, a rejected suitor, shot and killed Griswold in the library in front of her son before attempting to kill himself. The murder was committed on July 8, 1909. Fleischmann, also known as Edgewood, was located on Lafayette Avenue, just west of the Academy of the Sacred Heart's driveway at 525 Layfayette Avenue, in the Clifton community of Cincinnati, Ohio. The two story, stucco house, designed by James Gilmore, was built for Mrs. Sara Fleischmann in the 1880's by her grandfather George Schoenberger, as a wedding present. Some of the interior decoration inside the home was done by Charles Pedretti. The house was later bought by the Convent of the Sacred Heart for use as a dormitory. Max C. Fleicshmann was not only owner of Fleischmann Yeast (founded by his father Charles, and his uncle Maximilian in 1868), but, among many things, is recognized as being the first commander for an observation balloon school for US forces in Cuperly, France. The Academy of the Sacred Heart was a Catholic and Protestant boarding school for girls. The building at 525 Lafayette Avenue, originally called The Windings and home to hog baron William Neff, was built in 1868, and eventually sold to the Academy because he found it too costly to maintain. The school closed in 1970 and the building has since was converted into a condominium with seven units, in 1995 and again called The Windings, The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, under the name Sacred Heart Academy, in 1973. The area surrounding also has many new condominiums, including the area where Edgewood once stood. View on Ohio Memory.
